The closing of Bow Street, and a new chapter!

In Gratitude:

2018_headshot_3.JPG

I am writing to everyone today to announce that Bow Street Yoga will be closing at the end of the year. When I took over this beautiful practice space in 2016, I committed to trying to run a studio where the focus was on yoga practice more than the business. While I feel like in many respects I was successful in this endeavor, the construction and rising rents in the area have made it increasingly difficult to keep the studio open. Moreover, the personal stress of running a studio has simply exhausted me to the point of not being able to take care of myself.

I want to express my gratitude for all of the teachers and staff who have stood by me and continue to bring their passion to practice and teaching. I want to thank the students who have continued to show up week after week, remaining open to everything from rolling around on the floor to a vigorous practice to an intricate anatomy lesson. This space is truly one of a kind, and the practitioners who have spent time here are extraordinary in their kindness and capacity for yoga.

What's Next?

Often times I ask folks in class to inquire, "What support is needed?" This question has been on my mind all year. Specifically, what support is needed to continue to advocate for, as my teacher would put it, "yoga as a practice of spiritual wellness."  In the process of considering this question, it became clear that I needed to step out of being an administrator/owner in order to fully show up in teaching and to locate my teaching, training, mentoring, meditation, and bodywork in a school that will support the programming that is so exciting to me.

Beginning December 4th, I will offer all these pieces at Down Under School of Yoga, with studios in Cambridge (a few minutes away in Porter Square), Brookline, and Newton.

While I look forward to starting this new chapter, I am also committed to completing this chapter well. I will continue to teach at Bow Street till the end of the year and I invite anyone to reach out to me in person or online (ryan@ryanyoga.com) to discuss this decision, or simply have a cup of coffee.

I hope that all of you will continue to take your favorite classes through the end of December at Bow. Our last classes will be the morning of Sunday, December 29th, 9am - 12pm, take a look here for more details..

Thank you for all your messages of support and understanding!

- Ryan Cunningham (they/them/theirs)
